Entry #2. Maintaining a Work-life Balance

Trying to have a good work-life balance can feel so overwhelming sometimes. Between school, responsibilities at home, and preparing for the future, it can feel like there's always something that needs your attention. When everything starts piling on you, it's very easy to feel stressed. Most of the time, instead of taking a break, we either try even harder or just give up completely. Both are very bad options. The best thing to do is to just. Take. A. Break. Finding a balance between responsibilities and actually living your life is more important than it seems.

Growing up, I always felt like I needed to stay busy. I thought being productive all the time was the best method. At first, I didn't really notice haw tired I was getting. I would jump from one thing to another and rarely take time for a break. But after awhile, I started to realize I wasn't enjoying the things around me as much as I used to. I was getting drained, both mentally and physically. The stress was straining my relationships, both personal and professional. I knew a change was needed.

Why Work-Life Balance Is A Myth

The more I paid attention to it, the more I understood how important it is for me to take a break sometimes. I used to think taking a break was a bad thing, that I was falling behind, when in reality, it actually helped me a lot. And it didn't have to be a huge break or a vacation, even something simple like listening to music is a good way to relax. I actually took time to listen to music and found that live music was a great way to relax and live a little.

In my last blog entry, I talked about how hiking taught me the lesson of patience. I transferred that lesson here to remind myself that not everything needs to be finished immediately. Some things take time, and that's okay. When things get overwhelming, I remind myself that doing even a little is still moving forward.
Work-life balance isn't just about managing time, but also taking time away to take care of yourself. It's about not losing myself in all the pressure. Obviously finishing is important, but rest is just as important, if not more.
